Madison County – Madison County ranks number two on a list of the healthiest counties in Alabama, according to a new study conducted by SmartAsset. Three key factors were considered in the study, including length of life, health behaviors, and healthcare access. We talked to health enthusiasts in the community today who aren’t surprised by Madison County’s high ranking.

“Huntsville and Madison County has an awesome community for fitness if you’re wanting to work out in all different areas,” said Corrie Spearing, a self-described fitness lover and Iron Tribe member in Huntsville. “For diet and nutrition, there’s so many great shops that are opening up for healthy eating.”

The study ranks Shelby County as the first healthiest county in the state, and it ranks Baldwin County as the third healthiest.

Will Green, a personal trainer at Powerhouse Fitness and recently moved to Huntsville from Baltimore, says he is impressed overall by Huntsville’s high interest in health and fitness.

“I would say that 35-40% of the people at this gym have personal trainers, and another 10-15% do team training,” Green said.

As for the motivation for people in the community for staying fit?

“It’s nice outside about six or seven months of the year, so people have their shirt off or wear tank tops like this,” he laughs.

“With that health feeling comes a lot of happiness,” said Jordan Bowling, who works at Absolute Nutrition in Madison. “I believe people in this area are basically chasing that feeling of happiness.”
