Lost Birthdays in Phil Campbell- YOU can Help Directly!

By clint-deshazo, 12:28 PM

Greetings Tribe!

As many of you know, I  started an organization called “Alabama’s Lost Birthdays” this past spring and summer in direct response to the April 27 storms.

I have a really special birthday coming up THIS Thursday in Phil Campbell, Alabama, one of the hardest hit ( and less fortunate) areas in the state of Alabama.  The family we are helping lost their father two weeks before the storm.  On April 27 the F-5 tornado took everything else that they owned…. You can watch their story here :  ( ie..  the truck they were in was picked up and flipped 7 times )…

http://www.todaysthv.com/video/924656863001/0/Family-survives-Ala-tornado-after-truck-flips-7-times

Both of the kids have missed their birthdays ( his was June 10 and hers was May 13).  He turned 13 and she turned 7.

Here are a few interesting stats to date:

  • The family is currently living on $76 of food stamps per month ( family of three-  mom and daughter/ son)
  • Local organizations/ churches have raised enough money to rebuild the house.
  • Thirteen Year old Boy has one pair of jeans– NO winter clothes.
  • Seven year old Girl has NO winter clothes.
  • Mom and cousins ( 14, 15, 18) have NO Winter clothes-
  • Father that passed away was the only income producer for the family.

I am going to Phil Campbell on Thursday to give a birthday party to the girl and boy, but this family ( and extended family) have been through so much and have so many needs I think the Tribe can step up and help directly.

( above pic is from the new house built by a church from Maine for Jennifer!)

We have most of the birthday presents taken care of, but I would love to have the ability to buy them:

  • Beds for the children
  • Winter clothes for the entire extended family
  • Refridgerator the for new house
  • Computer and Wireless Card for internet connection
  • Wal Mart gift cards
  • The family is a divided family of mostly Alabama fans ( who have never seen a game)- Alabama fans- I would love to give the entire family a set of tickets to a non- LSU game in Tuscaloosa!

After serving on the front lines of the relief effort and then backing off to start and manage Lost Birthday’s, life caught up with me in August of this year.  With a looming wedding date (where does the time go???)  and a delayed job search ( April 27 has not respect- anyone know of any good sales positions ??) I need your help to make an impact in this families life.

We have several more birthdays that we are going to celebrate, but this is one of the more special ones we have helped!

TRIBE - Help me Give More Smiles Back!

Please call / text/ email for questions: If you are interested in going with me on Thursday, please let me know!

Thanks to IronTribe for supporting the Lakeshore Foundation

By Baird Beers, 01:35 PM

I want to take a second and thank the IronTribe for being a corporate sponsor over the weekend at the second annual “Amazing Race,” the Lakeshore Foundation’s biggest annual fundraiser.  The Tribe’s own Luan, Shyla, Tra, and Jim teamed up and participated in this year’s race.

Modeled after the TV show, teams of 4 from around the city compete in various challenges in an effort to win prizes and raise awareness for individuals that suffer from various physical disabilities.  Therefore, at each challenge, one or several members of each team must mimic a disability (i.e. wear a blindfold to mimic being blind, use a wheelchair, or not use an arm or leg).  Some of this year’s challenges included wheelchair rugby, hockey, frisbee golf, climbing, pool basketball, kayaking, and archery.

As a member of Lakeshore’s Young Professionals group, and also as a member of the sub-committee that helped plan this year’s race, I truly appreciate IronTribe’s willingness to participate and give back to the community.  In its second year, we went from 21 teams competing to 37 teams!

The Lakeshore Foundation is an organization that serves individuals with disabilities from all over the country, which includes many of our nation’s disabled Veterans, as well as athletes from all over the world that train at Lakeshore to compete every 4 years in the Paralympic Games. For more information, you can visit their website at www.lakeshore.org or join them on Facebook.

Luan, Shyla, Tra, and Jim, thank you again for your participation and support.  It truly means a lot to not only me, but to everyone at Lakeshore, as you guys helped make this year’s race an enormous success.
