BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Iron Tribe Fitness, a small Birmingham-based chain of gyms, is about to get pumped up. The 2-year-old company is just a week or two away from signing its first franchise deals, vice president for operations and partner Jim Cavale said Wednesday.
If all goes as expected, two franchised locations will be opened in greater Nashville before the end of the year, Cavale said. One franchisee is planning a gym in north Nashville and a different franchisee has plans south of the city. Cavale didn't identify the franchisees because the deals aren't finalized, but he said the majority of those who have been in discussions about franchises are satisfied members of the company's Birmingham-area gyms.
Discussions also are under way regarding franchises in Atlanta and Charlotte.
"We're very close to signing deals," Cavale said.
Iron Tribe began with a single gym in a garage in Homewood in 2010 and today has four Birmingham-area locations. The gyms specialize in a system of training that combines a variety of types of exercise in short, intense sessions.
Membership in Iron Tribe facilities is capped at 250 people per gym, and fees average about $250 per month.
Cavale and Iron Tribe founder and CEO Forrest Walden have big plans. They hope to have 300 franchised gyms within five years.
In addition to working on their expansion plans, Cavale and Walden are enjoying the publicity that comes with having recently won an award from Infusionsoft Inc., the company that provides their management software.
They'll be in New York on May 17 to watch an Infusionsoft-produced short film about Iron Tribe that will be shown on the Times Square Jumbotron on the W New York hotel.
